A Family Beach Session in Wildwood Crest, NJ

Meeting this adorable family for a sunset family beach session in Wildwood Crest, NJ was so much fun! The family of three were down vacationing at the Diamond Beach Resort and wanted to capture some amazing family beach photos to remember their time down at the Jersey Shore.

The iconic fishing pier is one of my favorite places in Wildwood Crest to capture families. The sunset highlights on the grasses as well as the smiles and backlit faces. This family of three from Pennsylvania were so much fun. Lots of silly smiles provided good pictures. I hope they are able to think about their vacation and smile because they have this precious images to remind them of such a wonderful family vacation.

I have four boys so when I met these brothers at the beach for this adorable family session, I saw my boys in them that was not too long ago. All the spunk and feistiness of small boys who are excited and exhausted from a beach vacation. yep, all this was my life many a years ago. Asking boys to stand so close while I take pictures always results in a shove, squeeze, or tight hug. But it is so fun to see that phase and to relive this stage for just a bit. Running is a must have in any small kid session mostly for me because it allows them to get energy out. I love the genuine smiles that running and playing in the ocean in clothes at the end of the session always provides. Who doesn’t love running into the ocean with clothes on anyway?

I love photographing this family for their holiday portraits. They have four kids so I know how hard it is to style a large family and make it look good. But every single time, this family shows up with the best outfits for family photos. They know how to be perfectly coordinated without being too matchy-matchy. This year, they brought their dog Barkley to capture the perfect family photo session. Barkley was more interested in all the birds chirping and the noises that come with being outside, then he was looking at me and all he noises I am making.

What to wear for fall family photos

Planning a fall family photo session? Struggling on what to wear? Here are my top tips that will really make your fall photos POP! Fall is such a wonderful time to get photos done. Just follow these tips, and fall will become your favorite time for family photos.

Stick with only 2-3 main colors. Fall is known for the natural colors in the landscape so I tell clients that they should provide a color palette that works with all family sizes and shapes. Blue is the basis for so many color palettes since so many colors blend well with it. Jeans are a staple in most families’ wardrobes. So blue usually starts with a good base. Adding another color that mom looks good in, is usually the next step.

2. Add a pop of color. Purple or mustard tend to make a great statement, weather it be a scarf, statement necklace, or a belt. Patterns are something that will allow a good pop as well as interest, but keep them limited. Too many patterns can overwhelm a good color combo.

3. Accessorize and layer. As I said before, necklaces, scarves, and belts are a great way to add a color pop, and allows a layering that will provide depth to a family photo.

4. Have Mom pick out color that look best on her first and then build the family colors and outfit choices around her. If mom looks good, she will like the photo so why not pick a color that compliments Mom so she can be sure that the photos make it off the computer screen and on to the walls.

My top tip for deciding on what to wear for your fall family photos is start with mom then work remaining pallets and outfits in.

All these tips are just a starting point. I think that nature provides a good palette and serves as a true inspiration.

Most important aspect is taking a deep breath and having fun. Nothing looks better on a person than a good smile!

This warm breezy night in Sea Isle City, NJ I had the pleasure to capture the P family. The large family was vacationing from Pennsylvania and enjoying the vacation in the little gem of Sea Isle. The grandkids were having the best time with each other. The kiddies all had some sun on their face which is a vacation staple. They were some of the best kids I had in terms of getting true smiles, and allowed me to get such great fun shots. I love getting fun pictures of the parents, and the look on the kids’ faces are all priceless.

One of my favorite times is when I ask the kids to get silly and jump up! It brings renewed energy into the session and always makes for good pictures. My favorite pictures are probably not always my client’s favorites but I love silly and touching moments. I really enjoyed my time with this family and hope they love their session as much as I did!
